Visiting the University of California, Riverside

On May 23rd, 50 DATA sophmores and juniors took a day out to visit the University of California at Riverside.

Students received a general campus tour and spent time with an admissions counselor, but the special part of the day came from meeting and interacting directly with several UC professors.

Students first heard a screenwriting / play writing presentation from Stuart Krieger and Rickerby Hinds, two theatre professors with equally impressive resumes. Both emphasized the importance of story, supporting creativity and out of the box thinking, as well as taking a chance to pursue your artistic passion while you are young.

After hearing from several members of the Chicano Student Program on what to expect as a student at UCR, DATA students heard from Derek Burrill, an associate professor from the Media and Cultural Studies department. Derek stimulated the student's understanding of the cultural impacts of video gaming on our society with questions and ideas from current research.

The day ended with an after hours visit to the California Museum of Photography's Digital Studio program.

  4. The trip to UCR was a great opportunity to know what to expect when going the collage. I learn that there are many people trying to make a difference in their community and and in other peoples lives. I know now from the trip that not every collage has the classes you want to take so you have to take that into consideration when looking for a school. I also learned that you can get a lot of help like financial aid, scholarships, and there are many groups that are willing to help you.

  5. I thought the trip to UCR was a great learning experience.I saw the diversity of many different groups on campus.I also learned that you have to try different classes to find the class of your preference .That you might think you have the classes that you want and it might turn out that it just wasn't working for you.So try and search what you really want to do.

  7. The trip to UCR was a wonderful experience! It was my first time visiting an actual university and it completely changed my perspective on the college life. It motivated me even more to strive for my goal of reaching a four university. I hope this college trip wasn't my last because this trip alone expanded my views on college.

  8. I learned a lot when I went to UCR. Not every college has the majors you are looking for. There were a lot of different clubs that were interesting like the Chicano Student Program. Professors informed us about the criteria they taught like screen writing. The experience really inspired me to pursue my dream and go to college.

  9. Going to UCR was a great campus to visit. Through out the trip i was getting more interested also by the way our guide talked about it. Further into the trip when we all came together and heard some of the professors talk it just made my mind think of more subjects that are offered and how the described the school. Also hearing some of the students talk about their experiences and how they accomplished going there, inspired me to keep trying and complete ambitions and that UCR offers a lot.

  12. It's so cool that the lower classman are opening up their eyes to new things. And the thing I'm going to miss most about DATA is going on the University trips. I've heard many good things come from this school and for the children to strive hard enough to get there from going on this trip is really something.

  17. Having the opportunity to go to UCR was amazing. There are a variety of different race which makes it different from all the other universities. The college students really made me focus on my future and making the right decision for my success. They made me realize that no matter the hardships of your life, you can overcome them. If you put your mind to it, you can and will make it to a university.

  19. The trip to UCR was a blast. I learned a lot. For example, you don't have to go into college with a set degree. That was a relief to me because i still don't know what i want to do when i graduate high school.

  29. This trip to UCR was probably the best trip by far, I loved how the campus was put together, and all the classes they offered. The speakers we had were so enthusiastic about the college and it got me wanting to go there after I transfer to COD. It will definitely be a school I'll be looking at.

  32. The UCR field trip was an amazing experience and very helpful. I appreciated the time and effort the staff and students took for us to make worth our wild. The teachers were very far and wise in their careers and gave very valuable advice. And the students gave us an upper hand by telling us about their past experiences and how they got to where they are today. My time for college will soon come.
