On May 23rd, 50 DATA sophmores and juniors took a day out to visit the University of California at Riverside.
Students received a general campus tour and spent time with an admissions counselor, but the special part of the day came from meeting and interacting directly with several UC professors.
Students first heard a screenwriting / play writing presentation from Stuart Krieger and Rickerby Hinds, two theatre professors with equally impressive resumes. Both emphasized the importance of story, supporting creativity and out of the box thinking, as well as taking a chance to pursue your artistic passion while you are young.
After hearing from several members of the Chicano Student Program on what to expect as a student at UCR, DATA students heard from Derek Burrill, an associate professor from the Media and Cultural Studies department. Derek stimulated the student's understanding of the cultural impacts of video gaming on our society with questions and ideas from current research.
The day ended with an after hours visit to the California Museum of Photography's Digital Studio program.

ReplyDeleteThe trip to UCR was a great opportunity to know what to expect when going the collage. I learn that there are many people trying to make a difference in their community and and in other peoples lives. I know now from the trip that not every collage has the classes you want to take so you have to take that into consideration when looking for a school. I also learned that you can get a lot of help like financial aid, scholarships, and there are many groups that are willing to help you.
ReplyDeleteI thought the trip to UCR was a great learning experience.I saw the diversity of many different groups on campus.I also learned that you have to try different classes to find the class of your preference .That you might think you have the classes that you want and it might turn out that it just wasn't working for you.So try and search what you really want to do.

ReplyDeleteIt's so cool that the lower classman are opening up their eyes to new things. And the thing I'm going to miss most about DATA is going on the University trips. The teachers were very far and wise in their careers and gave very valuable advice. And the students gave us an upper hand by telling us about their past experiences and how they got to where they are today. My time for college will soon come.
