The Digital Imaging program of the Digital Arts Technology Academy would like to congratulate the following students for their work being accepted into the 2011 Fine Arts Creativity Award and Scholarship exhibition at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Using photography, illustration, and/or Adobe Photoshop, students were challenged to investigate ideas surrounding the concept of Fantasy | Reality, creating imagery and writing professional artist statements that reflect their thoughts and support the creative process behind their work.

"This image depicts reality and creativity as a state of mind. Anyone is capable of being different and breaking through the barrier of a mundane reality via a connection to the arts. Although the subject in this image is resisting the transformation that signifies his new beginning, his crossing over to The New You is futile and in his best interest as whole person."

"This image is a portrait of a princess. It is a tribute to all the little girls in the world who use play and dress up to imagine that they are glamorous, beautiful, or special. The drawn crown and necklace were added in Photoshop to emphasize a playful, fairytale feel."
Which One?
"Ours lives are always confronted with choices, choosing one path over another. We are lead to believe that our decisions are independent and our own, but the reality is that most of what we “decide” is predetermined, under bias, or influenced somehow by others. If you “elect” to take the road most traveled, you may know what lies ahead and feel safe as you journey to the end of the trail. The road rarely taken may be steeped with darkness, mystery, and uncertainty. It is unknown or often casually omitted. The question really is... what does your common sense tell you? Where will the rewards of your fantasies versus your realities be found?"

"Life is filled with lies, secrets, and hardships. Many people feel it is necessary to cover up or hide the bruises and scrapes that come from life’s difficulties. They often pretend to be happy when their reality is painful. My work is a metaphor for this. "

"Life, Love and Death. Dia de Los Muertos is a celebration and remembrance of relatives that have passed on to another place. It honors those who have moved on, celebrating the reality that confronts us all."
I took part in two projects submitted to FACAS, one of my own and one in which I was the photo-subject for Aaron Teel's submission. This project took some critical thinking on my part to actually come up with an idea that fit the theme for this year. Although my own image did not get selected, I am happy to be a part of this project.
ReplyDeleteEven though I did not win a prize, I was still very proud that my image was shown at the Palm Springs Art Museum. I worked really hard to create this image, but I also had a fun time doing so.

ReplyDeleteIm into Fantasy projects, and making it into reality was even better. I had entered my project into the contest, but I didn't win anything. I don't care, I was happy that I tried.
