Advancing Student Achievement Through Technology

From March 17th -19th, nineteen DATA Di students assisted Apple Education at the 2011 Computer Using Educators conference in Palm Springs, California.

During the three day conference, students assisted in the set up of the mobile lab and lent a hand with presentations and hands-on workshops from Apple Distinguished Educators.

The photographic work of Cathedral City elementary, middle, and high school students will be on display during the LIVEARTS! event on Friday, April 8th at the Mary Pickford Theatre.

The awards ceremony will begin at 7pm!

Float! A global collaborative project for digital arts classes

 

As part of the 2011 Adobe Education Webinar Series, DATA Di instructor Matt Cauthron joined colleagues Mike Skocko from Valhalla High School (USA) and David Gran from the Shanghai American School (China) in sharing their global collaboration, Float!

Float!, their second project as the Student Creative, brings together classrooms interested in digital arts and photography from various parts of the world. The presentation was held on March 17, 2011 for a global audience of educators via Adobe Connect.

2011 Fine Arts Creativity at the Palm Springs Art Museum

The Digital Imaging program of the Digital Arts Technology Academy would like to congratulate the following students for their work being accepted into the 2011 Fine Arts Creativity Award and Scholarship exhibition at the Palm Springs Art Museum.  Using photography, illustration, and/or Adobe Photoshop, students were challenged to investigate ideas surrounding the concept of Fantasy | Reality, creating imagery and writing professional artist statements that reflect their thoughts and support the creative process behind their work.

"This image depicts reality and creativity as a state of mind. Anyone is capable of being different and breaking through the barrier of a mundane reality via a connection to the arts. Although the subject in this image is resisting the transformation that signifies his new beginning, his crossing over to The New You is futile and in his best interest as whole person."

"This image is a portrait of a princess. It is a tribute to all the little girls in the world who use play and dress up to imagine that they are glamorous, beautiful, or special. The drawn crown and necklace were added in Photoshop to emphasize a playful, fairytale feel."

Which One?

"Ours lives are always confronted with choices, choosing one path over another. We are lead to believe that our decisions are independent and our own, but the reality is that most of what we “decide” is predetermined, under bias, or influenced somehow by others. If you “elect” to take the road most traveled, you may know what lies ahead and feel safe as you journey to the end of the trail. The road rarely taken may be steeped with darkness, mystery, and uncertainty. It is unknown or often casually omitted. The question really is... what does your common sense tell you? Where will the rewards of your fantasies versus your realities be found?"

"Life is filled with lies, secrets, and hardships. Many people feel it is necessary to cover up or hide the bruises and scrapes that come from life’s difficulties. They often pretend to be happy when their reality is painful. My work is a metaphor for this. "

Dia de los Muertos

"Life, Love and Death. Dia de Los Muertos is a celebration and remembrance of relatives that have passed on to another place. It honors those who have moved on, celebrating the reality that confronts us all."

Creating Pandora's Box

Di students have been working in collaboration with two 3rd grade classrooms at Rio Vista Elementary to create imagery for a digital book and video based on the Greek myth, Pandora's Box. The book will contain the works of both high school and elementary students and will be made available to view online and in print. The project was inspired by the work of Yeondoo Jung with a focus on making a difference in the lives of others.

Here's how we rolled it out...

1. DATA sophomore Tyler Burns edited a version of the myth suitable for elementary students.
2. Di students visited Mr. Bible and Mrs. Molhoeke's Rio Vista classrooms to read the story and create sketches based on the readings.
3. PSUSD Visual and Performing Arts specialist Louisa Castrodale helped both 3rd grade classrooms create watercolor paintings from the drawings.
4. After the drawings arrived in the Di studio/classroom, students shot, edited and/or composited their interpretation of the 3rd grader's paintings using Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended.
5. Di students returned to present their work to the elementary students and teachers discussing their own creative processes.
