DATA digital imaging students, Leah Oakes and Markie Hackwith, were accepted into the Teen Docent Program at the Palm Springs Arts Museum. Students in this program study art history, practice public speaking, and lead tours for elementary school students. I really like the Teen Docent program. It has been a very fun and rewarding experience. First we went through training during the summer. That was so fun because I met a lot of people I wouldn't have known otherwise. We learned about the art which prepared us for giving tours. At first, I was very nervous to tour, but the kids are all great and love to learn about the art, and the $300 stipend wasn't bad either. This session has ended but both Leah and I are continuing in the spring. I am also starting over next summer.
ReplyDeleteThe opportunity that I have been giving regarding becoming a Teen Docent is absolutely phenomenal. The Teen Docent program is a highly selective program, where students are required to fill out an application, and are interviewed by the Education Programs Manager. Over 50 high school students applied, nearly 30 were selected.
ReplyDeleteOver summer, the selected docents-in-training were required to spend three weeks learning art history and public speaking, where students are required to construct tours and practice delivering them to others.
The program itself is divided into two different "styles": morning tours, and afternoon tours. Markie and I had the pleasure to tour during the afternoon, where many of the elementary school students that came to the museum were part of the Prop 49 program. The tours conducted last approximately an hour.
Upon completion of the program, docents receive a stipend of $300.00 in response to solid participation. Markiåe and I are among the 8 that were selected to tour for another session, commencing in January, and concluding in April.
