Skilled and Motivated Shoot Fashion Week

As part of their commitment to competing in the 2012 SkillsUSA photography competition series, 8 DATA Di students earned a position alongside professionals shooting this year's El Paseo Fashion Week. Students learned 'on the job' while interacting with professionals on the runway to photograph high fashion in an environment that simply can not be replicated in the classroom.

This event has been an annual highlight for students in the Digital Arts Technology Academy and we certainly would like to thank Susan Stein and the staff at Palm Springs Life magazine for providing this amazing opportunity to students at Cathedral City High School.

Streaming California Imagination

Two DATA Di students were recognized as Honorable Mentions for their creativity in the California Streaming photography contest. The annual challenge, offered by the California County Educational Technology Consortium, invited students this year to stretch their minds and render a visual response to Albert Einstein's quote, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

Awarding Nature in Color

The Nature In Color student photography winners have been announced! On Saturday, March 24th from 2:00-3:30 pm all students, families, and staff are invited to attend the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission's LiveArts! event to include: the student awards ceremony and Through the Photographers Lens: Nature and Desert Landscapes of the Coachella Valley - a lecture by local photographers Tom Brewster and Susan Evans. The event will take place at the Cathedral City Public Library and will emphasize unique approaches to photographic composition using nature both as a subject and personal inspiration.

Di Lands OnCUE

Selected works from DATA Di students were published in the Spring 2012 issue of the OnCUE Journal. The issue, Technology in Support of the Arts in the Curriculum, was delivered directly to over 3,000 conference attendees at the 2012 state-wide Computer Using Educators conference. In addition to this and it's normal print circulation, it is also available to all CUE members as a downloadable PDF via CUE.org and will launch the all new OnCUE+ app coming this April.

It is certainly an honor for both students and the DATA Digital Imaging program to be a part of such an amazing opportunity and know that student artwork is continually seen by the community at large.

PS Art Museum Power

Congratulations to the following two Di students for their work being accepted into the 2012 Fine Arts Creativity exhibition at the Palm Springs Art Museum! For this year's Valley-wide show, students were asked to investigate the theme of power and how it relates to their daily lives.

The exhibit will will run in the Jorgensen Gallery and Marks Graphics Center through May 20th with an awards show and gallery reception the evening of April 13th from 5:30-8:00 pm.

"A terrible past can control your life. It is in your memories, thoughts, and can curb your feelings. For most people its very easy to forgive and forget, but for others it is a long road ahead before they stop thinking about they're grim background. For them, it feels like it is literally imprinted into their DNA, and its always going to be there. But sometimes, all you need is someone or something in your life to keep you going.


I'm Kimberlyn Gonzalez and this is a self-portrait. My heart tattoo, on my neck, symbolizes my love of all things art. It sits on the right side of my neck for the right side of your brain is primarily the artistic side. I can always count on art, in all forms, to always be there when I need to pick myself up. It is grown to be a necessity in my life."

"On October 16, 1968, the Black Power salute made history. Tommie Smith and John Carlos were the two African Americans who had made this gesture. They did it to represent the unity of their movement. Neither one of them wore shoes. They both wore black socks representing the poverty that the black community faced. It also demonstrated the long walk to equality they were prepared to make.


This photo signifies the power of a race. A race that had to fight for everything they ever wanted. A race that overcame and is prosperous.


Growing up as a mixed-raced child was somewhat of a challenge. I was always told to embrace both my Mexican and African-American heritage. Watching how both the Mexican and African-American races have grown to be powerful in the work force was just one way both races have succeeded. From Cesar Chavez to Barack Obama, these races have shown to be strong and powerful. My name is Jasmine Mikulak and I'm a senior in the Digital Arts Technology Academy at Cathedral City High School."

Digital Graffitti for PhotocolorGraphix

As follow up to our February visit to PhotoColorgraphix in Palm Desert, owners Chas and Sharron Allen extended another amazing opportunity for DATA-Di students. Not only did they help two student teams prepare for the SkillsUSA Chapter Display competition series, but they also offered up an eGraffitti door design challenge. Here they were looking for a compilation of images, thoughts, gimmicks, notes, colors, contrasts, and/or effects that communicated what teens might want to display on their own bedroom doors. The winning image will be printed full scale for the student's door at home as well as act as a showroom display model for the local digital printing company.
