2012 Earth Through a Lens

Congratulations to the following Di students for sweeping the high school portion of the 2012 Earth Through a Lens photography competition! This year's theme challenged students to investigate the natural environment, the human impact on the environment, energy production, transportation, or the human figure in the environment. The students work will hang next to professionals from across North America at the Ranch Mirage Public Library from April through June with an awards ceremony held on Earth Day, April 21st.

Light Show
1st Place
Austyn Moreno
"This image depicts the relationship between the natural landscape of the desert and the man-made constructions found in our environment. The lights of automobiles passing by, the windmills as an energy source in the background, and the scrub brush of the White Water exit, all come together as a bold statement on the I-10 corridor."

Dry
2nd Place
Jasmine Mikulak
"I shot this photograph while on a hike in the La Quinta cove with my family. The image
portrays how we can still find beauty in the empty dryness of the desert."

A Second Life
3rd Place
Emilia Jimenez
"People usually do not stop to notice the small glimpses of beauty in nature, especially in the empty and dry environment of the desert. For me, its important to take the time to explore it, looking at it from a different perspective in order to uncover the subtle hints it leaves for us even during its' 'second life'."

Making a Difference in School Arts

Once again, our global digital arts collaborations make it to print (both ink and digital). This time it is in the March issue of School Arts Magazine, a national art education magazine committed to promoting excellence, advocacy, and professional support for educators in the visual arts since 1901.

The article, Float on to Surrealism, written by Student Creative partner David Gran, provides a wonderful overview of our three global projects just in time for the National Arts Education Association conference this February.

Additionally, the DATA Wikis were listed as a resource for secondary educators in the same issue. Digital Photography in the Art Curriculum, an article written by arts educator Theresa McGee, provides useful information about using photography to help level the field in visual arts classrooms.
